About this tournament

At its heart, chess is a war game between two kings and their armies. Players manoeuvre their forces, defend key positions and prepare attacks, each seeking to overcome the opposing army while protecting their own king. Yet both enjoy an advantage rarely available on a real battlefield: they can see exactly where every piece stands.

In military strategy, the fog of war describes the uncertainty of acting without a complete picture of the battlefield. Enemy positions are concealed, intentions must be inferred, and decisions have to be made before all the facts are known.

Fog of War brings that uncertainty to the chessboard.

You can see your own pieces and the squares they can reach on their next move. Opposing pieces outside your field of vision remain hidden. As pieces move, new parts of the position are revealed, while others disappear back into the fog. Each player sees a different picture of the same battlefield.

An advancing knight might discover a line of enemy pawns. A piece you spotted earlier may disappear from view, leaving you to consider where it could have gone. Moving forward can give you valuable information, but it can also reveal your position to your opponent.

Calculation remains important, joined by memory, pattern recognition, deduction and a willingness to take risks. You build your understanding of the position from what you can see, what you remember and what you suspect. Sometimes you have enough information to set a trap. Sometimes you have to trust your judgement and step into the unknown.

The uncertainty also creates opportunities for surprise results. A stronger chess player can be caught off guard, while an alert underdog may spot an opportunity that would never arise on a fully visible board.

Join the action, gather information, set traps and outsmart your opponents as you find your way through the fog.
