Petter Northug

Petter Northug is one of the greatest cross-country skiers of all time – a two-time Olympic champion, 13-time World Champion, and one of the most recognisable personalities in Scandinavian sport.

Known for his extraordinary finishing speed, tactical intelligence, and ability to perform when the pressure was at its highest, Northug turned cross-country skiing into compelling entertainment. His dramatic races, fearless confidence, and instinct for the decisive moment made him a sporting icon far beyond the world of skiing.

Few Norwegian athletes have enjoyed the rivalry with Sweden quite as much as Northug. Throughout his career, he became famous – and sometimes infamous – for his playful provocations and carefully aimed remarks at Swedish competitors and fans. Behind the teasing was a genuine sporting rivalry that created unforgettable moments and made him one of the Norwegian athletes Swedes loved to challenge.

In 2026, Northug has introduced himself to a new Swedish audience as a contestant on Let’s Dance, showing a different side of the competitive personality previously seen on the ski track.

His qualities also have a natural connection to chess. Both skiing and chess demand patience, tactical awareness, mental strength, and the ability to anticipate an opponent’s next move. Whether on skis, on the dance floor, or across the chessboard, Northug brings the same competitive instinct and unmistakable presence.

Now Northug is ready to renew his rivalry with his former Swedish competitors – this time across the chessboard. Which of them, if any, will dare to accept the challenge?

Program details will be announced.
