David Howell is an English chess grandmaster, commentator, and media personality widely regarded as one of the most insightful voices in modern chess broadcasting.

Born in London in 1990, Howell quickly emerged as one of Britain’s most promising young chess talents. During his playing career he established himself among the strongest English players of his generation.

Howell won the British Chess Championship three times (2009, 2013 and 2014) and reached a peak rating above 2700, placing him among the world’s top players. He has also represented England in numerous international team competitions, including the Chess Olympiad and the European Team Championship.

In recent years Howell has become especially well known for his work as a commentator and chess presenter. His combination of deep strategic understanding, clear explanations, and relaxed humour has made him a popular analyst for elite tournaments watched by global audiences. He has covered many of the world’s most important events, including tournaments in the World Championship cycle and other major international competitions.

Howell has also developed strong ties to the Nordic chess community and has spent significant time living in Oslo. He is part of the team behind the chess media platform Take Take Take, which produces interviews, coverage, and digital content from many of the world’s leading tournaments.

Today David Howell remains an active grandmaster while continuing to build a reputation as one of the most respected communicators in international chess.
